a sinful woman ate
Performance, 2023
Titled ‘a taste of knowledge, a sinful woman ate’, the core of this performance is exploring vulnerability and visibility. It is a tangible translation of experiences associated with mental endurance, which is often overlooked but quite heroic. Drawing inspiration from The Old Testament of Adam and Eve, Julie borrows references of the forbidden fruit as a symbol of morals to question gender issues including the male gaze and obedience. With an overtone of Contemporary, Julie attempts to engage with body politics, where her body becomes the matrix for artistic production. Through interwoven connotations, the performance is going to reveal sinuosities of the artist's inner identity.

In response to the anxiety towards nature’s deterioration, this is a lighthearted video where the artist examines the power dynamic between herself and her surroundings. Referencing the iconic 70’s pop song ‘These boots are made for walking’, Julie is teasing into social perpetuation about genderdised authority, where the flimsy plastics act as the futile protection for women. Through the use of playful-reimagining, the performance likens the unfulfilling and misogynistic nature of climate deniers. This video is the artist's indication that perhaps it is better to forgive and move on.

White lily is a favourite during the Renaissance for the depiction of purity of Virgin Mary. The artist borrowed white lilies’ symbolism to instead serve confrontation. Replacing interpretation of the flower to reconsider sexuality in society. And the act of devouring is her aggressive response to cultural ideas of preserving ones own virginity to maintain value.
